rod-tying-flyRod Skaggs

Combining his love of sports, the great outdoors and the opportunity to learn more about himself as a leader, Rod has been blessed with some very unique opportunities and has been humbled with some great people, friends & family. Rod had the opportunity to climb to Base Camp at Mt. Everest on a field leadership expedition with Wharton College. One year later, he had the opportunity to join a team of determined Eckerd College Students to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro at over 19,000 feet and visit the Serengeti of Africa. He just returned from an 18,000ft glacier in Mexico — Pico de Orizaba.

Currently Rod is a Licensed Guide in Alaska and spends time each summer playing on a dozen class IV and V rapids while white-water rafting and fly fishing in the wilds of Alaska. He keeps his business skills sharp as a Consultant on Leadership Programs in the outdoors. He ran the Amsterdam marathon, his 30th full Marathon around the world. He has given a key note address while riding a Harley Davidson to the stage of the Vinoy Renaissance hotel. Last year, he rode an Indian Motorcycle from Florida to Sturgis SD with his brother. He has enjoyed feeding sharks in the Caribbean and cave diving in the Florida springs.

Rod has restored old motorcycles, old cars and old houses built in the 1920s. He has raced a NASCAR around the one mile track at the Wide World of Sports. And yes, he even jumped out of an airplane. But Rod says the most exciting part of all of these adventures is the people that have touched his life. He has been blessed with their friendship. Through these relationships he has gained the true value of diversity and has learned more about himself and life than he could have only dreamed of. His hope is that through such volunteering opportunities as the Boys & Girls Club, or building a school in Nepal or sponsoring a family at Christmas, or even saying thank you to a service man or woman that has served our country, that he can give back a small token compared to the lifetime of treasures that they have bestowed upon him.

“Life presents each and every one of us with the challenges and opportunities of climbing a mountain every day. Some of these are as simple as an engineer going to work or a medical student taking an exam. Others may be as difficult as an amputee learning to walk or a mentally challenged to brush their teeth. It is our choices that determine the elevation we achieve. With a strong desire to achieve and dedication to persevere, the summit is within reach of us all.”
